The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on Monday announced a voluntary recall of more than 2.1 million cribs produced by Stork Craft Manufacturing, a Canadian company.

The British Columbia manufacturer recalled some 1 213 000 units distributed in the United States and another 968 000 units distributed in Canada.

The US watchdog agency said the recall affects retractable "drop-side" cribs with plastic hardware that can break or become detached, creating a space between the crib's hardware and mattress.

The malfunction could possibly suffocate infants and toddlers who become trapped in the space, the CPSC said.
