The world financial crisis has forced German car maker Opel to suspend production at two factories that employ more than 6500 workers, the daily Bild said on Tuesday.

Around 5000 workers at the Bochum plant in western Germany were temporarily laid off, and another 1800 in Eisenach will get a three-week furlough starting on Monday, the newspaper said.

Across all of its sites in Europe, Opel wants to reduce production by 40 000 vehicles between now and the end of the year, said Bild, adding that "as a result of the crisis, Opel also wants to temporarily close its Spanish factory and two sites in England."
