The rand shook off the euro's woes to end stronger against most currencies in early Wednesday trade.
At 9.31am the rand was bid at R8.38 to the dollar. It was bid at R10.45 to the euro and at R12.88 against sterling.
Gold was trading at US$1624.12 per ounce.
