At 9.47 the rand was bid at R8.24to the dollar. It was bid at R10.53 to the euro and at R13.00 against sterling.
Bonds firmer ahead of auction
South African bonds were slightly firmer in early morning trade on Tuesday, ahead of the weekly government bond auction.
The National Treasury will auction R500 million worth of R203 bonds, R500 million worth of R208 bonds and R1.1 billion worth of R214 bonds at 11:00.
At 08:50, the benchmark R157 bond was trading at 6.330 percent, from Monday's close of 6.340 percent. The R207 was bid at 7.545 percent and offered at 7.520 percent from a previous close of 7.540 percent and the R186 was trading at 8.270 percent from its close of 8.275 percent.
