Controversial Gauteng local government and housing MEC Humphrey Mmemezi quit on Wednesday.

In a statement, he apologised for personal purchases made on a government credit card.

"After consultation with my organisation, through the ANC integrity committee and the provincial office bearers, I have decided that the most honourable thing to do under these circumstances is to step down from the executive council as the MEC," he said.

Allegations were also levelled against him publicly, relating to the misuse of an official vehicle, as well as his previous work at the Mogale City Local Municipality.

Mmemezi maintains that some allegations against him are false.

The ANC's Dumisa Ntuli said, "He has resigned as the MEC effective from today. The party has accepted his resignation."
