document.write("We were all told that South Africa was protected from the banking crises. What caused the economic problems here? The Reserve Bank must take the lion’s share of the blame. Their initial failure to dramatically cut interest rates along with the rest of the world caused a 25% collapse in the value of the Rand, thereby increasing inflation and probably led to the current recession. The Reserve bank’s mandate to effectively ignore growth and only manage inflation is absurd: inflation and growth management should go together.
