Rural Development Minister Gugile Nkwinti has handed over title deeds for more than 4000 hectares of farmland which was seized during apartheid to the community of Mamre.
The minister officially handed over 4200 hectares of land to the farming community as part of the town's Heritage Day celebrations.
South Africa is marking 100 years since the introduction of the Natives Land Act of 1913.
In order for the land to be legally transferred to the Mamre community, residents had to establish a Communal Property Association.
The department's Vuyani Nkasayi says the association will manage the land.
"The Communal Property Association is a legal entity, a committee of people that are representing the people."
More than 2000 households in the rural community are expected to benefit from the transfer.
