Trade union federation, Cosatu, in the North West province said it planned to go ahead with its protest at the Swartruggens toll plaza on the N4 between Rustenburg and Mahikeng on New Year’s Eve.
This comes after confusion surrounding the status of the trade union's application to have the demonstration led them to accuse local municipalities of foul play.
Cosatu wants the fees, which will see light-motor vehicle users paying R71, to be reduced or suspended until an appointed task team has completed its work into tolling at the plaza
Cosatu's Solly Phetoe said it was unacceptable that there is no set time frame for the team to complete its work.
“It cannot be correct that we agree with the task team to continue and suspend our actions.
“Who knows if the task team will complete its work in 2013 or 2014?”
Meanwhile North West police have told Eyewitness News they have not yet been briefed on the protest.
