The South African Clothing and Textile Workers’ Union (Sactwu) on Thursday welcomed government's confirmation that every clothing item, for state employees, must be produced in South Africa.

The industry has suffered in recent years, as many garments have been imported from China.

Recently, the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) was slammed for its decision to import kits for competitors.

All police, army and correctional services uniforms, as well as gear for parastatals, will have to be Proudly South African.

Sactwu's Fachmy Abrahams said, “We’re overjoyed. The government has made several interventions for our industry.”

The Cape Chamber of Commerce's Michael Bagraim said the move will give the ailing textile industry a boost.

“This is good news for our factories.”
