Gold miner AngloGold Ashanti (ANG) said Friday that a fatal accident occurred on Thursday at its Moab Khotsong mine near Orkney.
A driller was struck by a fall of ground at 13:45. He was immediately evacuated to hospital but passed away at about 16:30 as a consequence of injuries sustained, the company said in a statement.
Mine management on Thursday night suspended all drilling and blasting operations at the mine, though safety-related activities such as installing support continue.
Members of the DMR inspectorate will be carrying out an inspection of the scene of the accident on Friday morning.
