The Western Cape does not need a rapid rail system similar to the Gautrain, provincial Transport MEC Robin Carlisle said on Thursday.

But he did suggest that Metrorail was planning an express train on all its lines.

Carlisle believes this could be a reality in three years time.

He said the northern line already offers a business express train service.

"I would like to see a great expansion of what we call the business class train. This is a relatively high speed train, travelling on our existing tracks, stopping at very few stations."

Earlier this week, the Western Cape Metrorail unveiled a R260-million plan to beef up its service.

The rail operator will hire an additional 100 reservists from the South African National Defence Force.

Metrorail said it will also install a multi-million rand CCTV monitoring system.
