South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) Chief Executive Officer Nazir Alli has resigned.

In a written statement issued by chairperson of the board, Tembakazi Mnyaka, the resignation was received and accepted at a board meeting on Monday.

Alli will continue working as the CEO until 3 June when his resignation will take effect.

The resignation comes a week after North Gauteng High Court's Judge Bill Prinsloo granted an interdict to halt the controversial e-tolling system.

E-tolling will now undergo a full review on a date set by the court.

Alli has been the CEO of Sanral since 1998.
