An estate agent survey on Tuesday showed that the majority of homeowners cannot afford to maintain their properties.

According to the First National Bank (FNB) Home Loans' second quarter survey only 41 percent of homeowners, have the necessary funds to repair damage to their houses.

That is a drop of more than 38 percent since 2004.

MUA Insurance Acceptances managing director Christelle Fourie said insurers would not pay out claims for badly maintained homes.

"If you don’t look after your property and you suffer storm damage or a loss and the insurance company can prove that it was because of bad maintenance, the insurance will not pay your claim," she said.
