A mineworker was killed at Harmony Gold's Virginia operations on Monday, the company said.

It said a tramming accident in the early hours of the morning caused the death of the worker at Virginia's Merriespruit number three shaft.

Management and the department of mineral resources had begun investigations into the accident, the company said in a statement.

This was the second accident at Harmony Gold's operations in the past few days.

On Friday, a mineworker died at the company's Elandsrand mine after a seismically-related earth-fall.
