Suspended director of Gauteng's roads and transport department, Sibusiso Buthelezi, has been given a year's salary in exchange for his resignation, the department said on Friday.
Buthelezi was suspended in July by Transport MEC Bheki Nkosi, with the support of Premier Nomvula Mokonyane, after allegations surfaced that he had irregularly given tenders to companies owned by friends.
"Allegations were made and a committee implicated him," spokesman Philemon Motshwaedi said.
However, the process to remove Buthelezi from his position would have been a lengthy one.
"It could not go on and on. It would needed to become very expensive."
As part of their agreement with Buthelezi, the department has withdrawn its criminal charges against him. Motshwaedi said the department would not interfere with law enforcement agencies still wishing to prosecute Buthelezi.
"We wish to reiterate that the department will in no way prevent law enforcement agencies from undertaking any process against any and all employees of the department involved in maladministration and corruption."
