Eskom's former CEO Jacob Maroga will not receive a golden handshake, acting chairman and CEO Mpho Makwana confirmed on Thursday.
"Maroga resigned and will therefore receive no golden handshake," he said at a media briefing called to clarify the confusion over Maroga's resignation.
Makwana confirmed that Maroga, who worked at the power utility for more than 15 years, is no longer CEO.
Despite the confusion that arose over the past two weeks over Maroga's position at the utility, the board said Maroga's verbal resignation was "clear and unambiguous"; it was also accepted at a board meeting late in October.
The ensuing misunderstanding over whether Maroga had resigned now appears to have arisen out of the legality and validity of the verbal resignation.
Now resolved, the board said it is united and committed to getting Eskom back on track.
Makwana said his fundamental role was to ensure that Eskom continued with and focused on its mandate of providing secure electricity.
"Of fundamental importance for South Africa is that along with providing a reliable electricity supply, Eskom remains financially sustainable as we proceed with the tariff application process, and going forward, that we are able to secure sufficient funding to proceed with our build programme," said Makwana.
