Business Unity SA (Busa) on Wednesday expressed "deep concern" at recent developments at Eskom.

"Apart from Eskom, Busa's concern also stems from its impression that a pattern of governance difficulties appears to have emerged in several other parastatals such as Transnet, SAA and the SABC," Busa said in a statement.

It warned that if these were not corrected soon, the cumulative impact on the economy could be serious.

"Busa urges government to play a leadership role in helping to resolve these problems and to ensure compliance with good corporate governance practice."

Busa said it was necessary to restore confidence in the governance processes and structures of parastatals such as Eskom.

Media reports on Wednesday morning said Jacob Maroga was no longer Eskom's CEO but neither the company nor the department of public enterprises would comment, promising a statement later in the day or on Thursday.

Maroga was believed to have resigned verbally last week but returned to work on Monday with the company saying there had been a difference in interpretation of the gesture.

Chairman Bobby Godsell then resigned.
