Eskom's board is expected to reveal on Wednesday whether Jacob Maroga is still the company's chief executive.
Eyewitness News reported on Tuesday that the board was unhappy that Maroga arrived for work on Monday.
It is understood he was refused entry to the building on Tuesday.
Earlier this week, board chairman Bobby Godsell resigned after he had told Eskom staff Maroga was leaving.
Eyewitness News understands the remaining board members still believe that he has legally resigned.
The next step for the board could be crucial; it may want to suspend Maroga.
However, legal sources say if that step is taken it could give legal recognition to his status as CEO.
The board should outline how it views the issue on Wednesday.
