Eskom chief executive Jacob Maroga has not resigned and will not resign as head of the electricity utility, the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) said on Thursday.
ANCYL said it rejected Eskom board's attempts "to push" Maroga out of Eskom. This comes after unconfirmed reports that Maroga had tendered his resignation. It is believed that Eskom chairperson Bobby Godsell had told Eskom staff that the resignation had been accepted by the board. "The board, which is under the manipulative control of Bobby Godsell, has tried every trick in the book to get rid of Maroga, including through increment of his salary amidst electricity challenges, so that the South African public can perceive him as greedy. They are now spreading a rumour that Maroga has resigned as Chief Executive Officer of Eskom and that is a complete lie," ANCYL said in a statement. The youth league blamed the South African government under former president Thabo Mbeki for the massive challenges Eskom is facing today. The government, more specifically minister of public enterprises Barbara Hogan, and the Eskom board were this week said to be embroiled in a battle over Maroga's future. While the board has been calling for Maroga's resignation for a week, the government has supported him, saying you cannot lay the entire blame for troubles at Eskom on the shoulders of one individual. "Eskom as a state owned enterprise should be a beacon of transformation, not a sight of business factions' battles," said ANCYL.I-Net Bridge
