All miners at Harmony's Target mine have been accounted for following an accident that left two miners dead, the company said on Tuesday.

This followed a fall of ground incident at the mine on Monday in which two miners were killed and another two had to be brought to the surface by rescue teams.

"The two surviving miners are still in hospital... they're injured but stable," Harmony spokeswoman Esha Brijmohan said.

"Rescue operations did continue through the night just to make doubly sure that no other miners were trapped," she said.

Inspections had commenced on Tuesday morning and the area where the fall of ground had occurred was still closed, she said.

The Target gold mine is situated near Welkom in the Free State.
