Four miners were trapped underground at Harmony's Target mine in Welkom on Monday afternoon, the company said.

"The accident happened today (Monday) and rescue teams are currently working underground to free the four trapped miners," Harmony's spokesperson Marian van der Walt said at around 2.15pm.

"At this stage, I cannot give you any more details," she said.
