South Africa's policy is to pursue a floating exchange rate, outgoing SA Reserve Bank governor Tito Mboweni said in Pretoria on Thursday.

Earlier in the day the local currency was hit by "freeze talk", after a media report in Beeld stated that Economic Development Minister Ebrahim Patel had decided to "freeze" the rand.

Mboweni said he had spoken with the minister and he had denied saying anything about the currency.

"Exchange rate policy is determined by National Treasury, the Cabinet and the SARB and the existing policy is to pursue a floating exchange rate. No decision has been taken to the contrary."
