Eskom says it knows increasing electricity prices by 45 percent annually over the next three years is going to be painful.

It released some of the details of its application to energy regulator Nersa on Tuesday.

Eskom CEO Jacob Maroga was asked by Talk Radio 702's Chris Gibbons why corporations like BHP Billiton would not be affected because they have power agreements.

He said, "It's a painful adjustment but unavoidable adjustment for a sustainable and secure future."
