The Ford Motor Company of SA (FMCSA) will get a R105-million incentive if it wins a bid to manufacture the Ford T6 in Gauteng, economic development MEC Firoz Cachalia said on Tuesday.

"This support by government is intended to help FMCSA to secure the bid to manufacture the Ford T6 at its plant in Silverton, Tshwane," Cachalia told reporters in Johannesburg.

If its bid was successful, the amount would be paid over a five year period and included R50-million to set up a supplier park, R40-million for training and R15-million for set-up and operational costs.

An estimated 80 000 jobs would be created. The lifespan of the project would be 12 years.

The outcome of FMCSA's bid to manufacture the T6 at the Tshwane plant should be known in the course of this week.

Cachalia said BMW SA was involved in a bidding process to manufacture the next generation three series (the f30) at its plant in Rosslyn in Tshwane.

If its bid was successful, the project would bring in an investment of about R3.5-billion, said Cachalia.

A government incentive from the department of trade and industry, and provincial and local government would also be given if the Tshwane BMW project got the go-ahead.

The outcome of this bid should also be known shortly.
