The strike in the chemical, pharmaceutical and paper industries
continued on Tuesday.
Thabane Mdlalose, spokesperson for the Chemical, Energy, Paper,
Printing, Wood and Allied Workers Union (Ceppwawu), told Sapa that
workers were picketing on Tuesday morning.
A countrywide march was planned for Monday, he added.
"The pulp and paper section met with employers at the
[Commission for Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration] yesterday
[Monday] — but nothing came of the meeting as the employers would
not move from their position," Mdlalose said.
Ceppwawu's members initially demanded a 10 percent increase, but
this shifted to 13 percent.
"But we are prepared to settle for 10, 11, 12 percent, but
nothing below 10 percent," Mdlalose said on Monday.
Employers were offering eight percent.
