Metrorail has obtained an interim court order declaring a strike by its employees in Gauteng North illegal, the company said on Sunday.

SA Transport and Allied Workers' Union (Satawu) members were planning to strike on Monday morning, Metrorail said in a statement.

"Despite many attempts at finding a resolution to the deadlock, Satawu seemingly has sought to resort to this action.

"The company has in the meantime obtained an interim court order declaring the pending strike illegal and instructing all workers to refrain from participating in an illegal action."

The statement said the strike was believed to be related to "regional personnel matters and in no way related to the current ongoing substantive wage negotiations".

Metrorail said the strike would be illegal in terms of the Labour Relations Act, and it would apply a "no work, no pay" policy.

Management and union leaders were meeting on Sunday evening to try to resolve the matter.
