The SA Banking Risk Information Centre (Sabric) on Thursday
applauded a vow by Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa to clamp down on
cash-in-transit heists.
"Sabric... welcomes with encouragement the announcement
yesterday [Wednesday] by the Minister of Police, Mr Nathi Mthethwa,
that the National Department of Police will give special attention
to the continued incidents of cash-in-transit heists and intensify
police efforts to combat organised crime."
Sabric CEO Kalyani Pillay said in a statement it was clear the
new administration had realised the need to give special attention
to organised crime.
"We are extremely encouraged by this development and commit
ourselves to partnering with government in its efforts, especially
in so far as combating organised crime in the banking and CIT
[cash-in-transit] industries is concerned," said Pillay.
Mthethwa, in his budget vote speech on Wednesday, said
cash-in-transit heists remained a mater of
"vital concern" to the
government.
"The threat posed to the public, where heavily armed criminals
conduct heists in public spaces, requires intervention. The
ministry is currently looking at a number of different approaches
to address this problem," said Mthethwa.
