The Gauteng government has promised to make overdue payments to
small businesses from next week, blaming late submission of invoices
and the "economic situation" for the delays.
"The Gauteng government has decided that urgent payments to small,
medium and micro enterprises be paid from next week. All other
outstanding payments will have to be cleared by the second week of
April," it said in a statement.
The provincial government said the late submission of invoices by
suppliers, the sudden increase in the volume of invoices to be
processed and the economic situation were to blame.
"Many suppliers tend to wait long before submitting their invoices.
It is common for invoices to be submitted in the last few months of the
financial year."
Government departments had also been receiving invoices with higher
prices than expected, requiring fresh negotiations with suppliers and
creating delays.
