Car manufacturer Volkswagen on Friday recalled more than 4000 of its Polo 1.9l 96kW TDi vehicles in South Africa, due to a turbo charger fault.

"VW requests the 4836 owners of the affected vehicles produced between January 2005 and May 2008 to contact their nearest Volkswagen dealer to arrange an appointment to have the reliability of the turbo charger assessed," the company said in a statement.

The inspection may necessitate the replacement of the turbo charger.

Volkswagen said this would be covered in terms of the manufacturers' warranty.

"VW of SA will attempt to contact all affected Polo 1.9l 96kW TDi owners directly," it said.
