Diversified industrial manufacturer SPX Corporation has confirmed that its thermal equipment and services affiliate has been awarded a $124-million (R1.3-billion) contract with Hitachi Power Africa to provide key products for South African power utility Eskom's new Kusile Power Station.

The contract involves the manufacture, building and supply of steam generators for the 4800 megawatt station that will be constructed in Mpumalanga, SPX Corporation said in a statement on Tuesday.

Formerly referred to as Project Bravo, Kusile is the second of two coal- fired power stations being built by Eskom.

Eskom expects the first generating unit at the Kusile station to be completed in late 2012, followed by the completion of additional units every six months.

SPX, which is also providing feedwater heaters and air-cooled condensers to Kusile, has also secured contracts for the Medupi Power Station.

The 4788 megawatt Medupi Power Station, near Lephalale in Limpopo province, is the first coal-fired plant to be built in South Africa in 20 years.

Medupi's first generating unit is expected to be completed in 2011.

Headquartered North Carolina, SPX established its manufacturing presence in Nigel in South Africa in 1970, and expanded manufacturing capacity earlier this year.
