A mineworker has been killed and another injured during a seismic event at Simmer & Jack's Buffelsfontein gold mine in the North West, the company said on Monday.

"The incident took place on Friday... at the mine's number two shaft, triggering a fall of ground in the stope where the men were working," read a statement.

The injured mineworker was being treated at the Duff Scott hospital, near Stilfontein. Work at the shaft was suspended pending a review of seismic safety initiatives.

Said CE Gordon Miller: "The company views this incident in an extremely serious light and will be reviewing the situation with representatives of the Department of Minerals and Energy, organised labour and independent rock engineering specialists".
