More than 230 workers from BM Food Manufacturers in Lanseria, Johannesburg have downed tools due to wage disputes.
The workers, who currently earn R79 per day, have asked for their wages to be increased to at least R90 per day.
The manufacturer distributes food to giant retail establishments across the country which include Pick n Pay, Checkers Hyper and Spar.
Established in 2006 BM Food Manufacturers (Pty) Ltd was founded as a result of a merger of two well established food manufacturers in South Africa, namely Bettafresh Prepared Foods and Mediterranean Delicacies.
General Industries Workers Union of South Africa John Apollos says the workers began strike action last year December 2017.
“Many of the workers stay in the informal settlement. The leadership of the informal settlement are in talks with the management on behalf of the workers” he says.
