A village in Limpopo has turned their waste management situation into a business opportunity for the youth as part of Mandela Day celebrations.
Moletjie village, outside Polokwane, has implemented an e-waste management programme in partnership with Samsung SA which will train 20 unemployed youth from the area to dismantle old and unused electrical appliances.
“We encourage young people to start their own businesses out of waste”, said Samsung SA spokesperson, Pitso Kekana. “We teach them how to crash and dismantle old electrical appliances and sell them”
The initiative aims to create a cleaner world while at the same time empowering unemployed youths with skills that can help that happen.
“The project has developed me, I am now thinking of starting my own business”, said programme participant Edson Moloto. “This is an opportunity that I have been waiting for”.
The programme is said to have plans to expand in order to train more young people in business and render more opportunities available to them.
