US stocks closed lower for a second straight day on Tuesday as investors awaited the outcome of the Federal Reserve's two-day monetary policy meeting.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 64.71 points (0.49 percent) at 13,008.30 in closing trade.
The S&P 500 fell 6.13 points (0.44 percent) to 1,379.17 and the tech-rich Nasdaq dropped 6.32 (0.21 percent) to 2,939.52.
Dick Green at Briefing.com noted that most economists expect the central bank's Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) will hold off on any additional easing measures until at least September. The FOMC meeting wraps up Wednesday.
"Tomorrow is likely to be volatile," Green said.
