The JSE opened flat on Tuesday on the back of a strong rand and slightly weaker US futures as market players await earnings in the US later today.
At 9.12am, the JSE all share index had weakened 0.49 percent, with resources giving up 0.60 percent. Gold miners were off 0.44 percent and platinum counters lost 1.03 percent.
Banks eased 0.33 percent and financials and industrials gave up 0.25 percent and 0.28 percent respectively.
The rand was bid at 7.88 to the dollar from 7.93 when the JSE closed on
Monday. Gold was quoted at $948.22/oz a troy ounce from $948.73/oz at the
JSE's last close, and platinum was at $1188/oz, from $1180/oz at its
previous close.
"We are flat this morning. US futures are a little lower. There are
earnings out in the US this evening and maybe people just want to sit on the
sideline and wait for those," a Johannesburg-based trader said.
"The rand is still strong and it will continue to cap gains
among these
resources and dual-listed stocks," he said.
