The rand gained ground by midday on Friday on the back of a weaker dollar, as markets waited on US consumer data out later.
At 11.31am the rand was bid at 7.4351 to the dollar from 7.4564 at its previous close.
It was bid at 11.0831 to the euro from its previous close of 11.0703.
Against sterling, it was bid at 12.4046 from 12.3720 before.
At 11.58am gold was bid at $1109 an ounce.
