The rand kept a close watch on the dollar in midday trade on Friday as it waited on US housing data for further direction.

At 11.36am the rand was bid at 7.4297 to the dollar from 7.3822 at its previous close.

It was bid at 11.1790 to the euro from 11.1090 previously.

Against sterling it was bid at 12.1953 from 12.2828 before.

At 11.16am gold was quoted at $1058.80 an ounce.
