The rand returned to calmer levels against major currencies in noon trade on Friday after slumping more than three percent against the dollar late on Thursday.

At 12.45pm the local unit was bid at 9.9557 against the greenback from its previous close of 9.8863.

The rand was bid at 12.8327 against the euro from its previous close of 12.7965.

Against sterling the rand was bid at 14.5078 from its previous close of 14.1643.

Gold was quoted $935.30 a troy ounce.
