The rand was steady against major currencies in noon trade on Thursday after slumping against the dollar in late trade on Wednesday. The local unit ignored current account data released earlier by the reserve bank.

At 12.32pm the local unit withdrew 0.34 percent against the greenback and was bid at 7.8750 from its previous close of 7.8574.

The rand slipped 0.06 percent against the euro and was bid at 11.4093 from its previous close of 11.3960.

Against sterling the rand lost 0.51 percent and was bid at 14.0163 from its previous close of 13.9640.

Gold jumped 1.03 percent and was quoted $808.50 a troy ounce.
