The rand slumped against major currencies in noon trade on Wednesday as the dollar continued its climbing streak on falling oil prices.

At 12.35pm the local unit plummeted 1.84 percent against the greenback and was bid at 7.8928 from its previous close of 7.7538.

The rand slumped 1.00 percent against the euro and was bid at 11.3903 from its previous close of 11.2750.

Against sterling the rand tumbled 1.16 percent and was bid at 13.9947 from its previous close of 13.8318.

Gold plunged 0.95 percent and was quoted $796.85 a troy ounce.
