The rand pulled back against major currencies in noon trade on Monday but was off the morning's worst levels as the dollar retreated on fears of Hurricane Gustav's impact on oil prices.
At 12.15pm the local unit dropped 0.63 percent against the greenback and was bid at 7.7120 from its previous close of 7.6764.
The rand eased 0.29 percent against the euro and was bid at 11.3267 from its previous close of 11.2875.
Against sterling the rand shed 0.16 percent and was bid at 13.9237 from its previous close of 13.9188.
Gold gained 0.18 percent and was quoted $831.05 a troy ounce.
