The rand was steady against major currencies in noon trade on Thursday amid a lack of direction while the dollar stayed firm on the falling oil price.

At 12.16pm the local unit shed 0.38 percent against the greenback and was bid at 7.5690 from its previous close of 7.5457.

The rand dropped 0.60 percent against the euro and was bid at 11.8822 from its previous close of 11.8509.

Against sterling the rand gained 0.21 percent and was bid at 15.0500 from its previous close of 15.0718

Gold collected 0.83 percent and was quoted $927.10 a troy ounce.
