JSE edges into the black

The JSE edged up into the black before close on Wednesday while receiving a good boost as the euro continued to firm against the greenback while the price of gold eyed a new record high.

The JSE's all share index gained 0.41 percent and closed at 27 489.240 points.

Resources climbed 1.24 percent while the gold and platinum mining indices lifted 1.06 percent and 1.34 percent respectively.

However banks and financials shed 0.09 percent and 0.21 percent respectively while industrials slipped 0.21 percent.

Resources heavyweight, Anglo American plc lifted 2.25 rand to 329 rand while rival BHP Billiton collected 2.06 percent higher to 234.73 rand. Synthetics giant, Sasol rose 2.02 rand to 302 rand.

Among gold counters, AngloGold Ashanti gained three rand to 333 rand, Gold Fields edged up one rand to 110 rand while Harmony added 2.19 percent, to 81.50 rand.

Among platinum miners, Anglo Platinum lifted 2.53 percent to 754.60 rand, Impala Platinum advanced 1.19 rand to 174 rand while Lonmin gained 1.51 percent to 222 rand.

Steel maker, ArcelorMittal withdrew 2.19 percent to 107 rand while Highveld Steel pulled back 1.41 percent to 63.10 rand.

Kumba Iron Ore lifted 2.28 rand to 265.18 rand.

Among industrials, brewer SABMiller retreated one rand to 220 rand, Bidvest eased 1.03 percent to 118.76 rand, British American Tobacco dropped 1.59 percent to 234.60 rand however fast-moving consumer goods group Tiger Brands bucked the losing trend adding 1.39 percent to 165.26 rand.

Cellular group, Vodacom added 1.45 percent to 59.50 rand.

Media group Naspers withdrew two rand lower to 288 rand however Avusa rocketed 11.76 percent to 19 rand.

Pharmaceutical company Adcock Ingram lost 2.46 percent to 51.20 rand.

Sugar group Illovo pulled back 2.58 percent to 30.20 rand.

Construction giant, Aveng retreated 1.78 percent to 38.70 rand, Murray & Roberts tumbled 3.50 percent to 51 rand, Basil Read Holdings lost 2.60 percent to 14.60 while WBHO withdrew 2.61 percent to 110.05 rand.

Financial services group, Sanlam gained 1.35 percent to 22.50 rand.
