Taxi operators in the North West have been granted a R500 000 contract to transport football fans during the Confederations Cup, the provincial public safety department said on Friday.

About 141 local taxis will transport fans from park-and-ride facilities in the province to the Royal Bafokeng Stadium, in Rustenburg, where Fifa Confederations Cup matches will be played, said spokesperson Lesiba Kgwele.

"This (agreement) is in line with empowerment of local service providers as per the memorandum of agreement signed by North West host city of Rustenburg with key transport and taxi industry players earlier this week," he said.

The agreement stipulates that a committee made up of members from the Rustenburg local municipality, Greater Rustenburg Transport Cooperative and the local National Taxi Alliance will oversee transport operations from the Rietvlei N4, Western bypass, Boshoek and the Impala-Bobuanja park-and-ride facilities to the stadium.

Taxi operators will earn between R1470 and R2320 a day depending on each taxi's seating capacity.

Roads around the stadium have been declared traffic-free zones.

"The Phokeng-Sun City road from Uncle Tom intersection passing the stadium up to Phokeng Post Office has been declared a traffic free zone," said Kgwele.

"Only pedestrians, VIPs, VVIPs and players will be allowed to use this part of the road."

He warned that people should not leave valuables inside their cars when parking at the park-and-ride facilities.

"We advise that such items should be not be brought along to match venues, alternatively they should be locked in the boot at all times."

Vehicles parked illegally outside park-and-ride venues would be towed away and impounded at the owner's expense.
