Telkom may have to deal with a strike if it can’t reach an agreement with unions over wage increases. The parties involved in wage talks, which began in March, have reached a stalemate.
According to Fin24, the unions that represent 18 000 of the 20 000 workers at the parastatal have referred a wage dispute to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).
Telkom offered a wage increase of 1.5 percent. The offer was rejected by the unions, which want 8.8 percent (Solidarity), 9 percent (South African Communications Union) and 11.5 percent (Communication Workers’ Union), Fin24 reported.
The unions have not ruled out the possibility of industrial action if Telkom refuses to meet their demands.
